Canadian Equipment Industry Training Committee

What's Ahead

Because of the support and success it has enjoyed so far, CEITC is now looking at broadening its base of stakeholders by approaching end-users in related industries such as construction, road building and mining. These industries use heavy equipment; some have teams of service or parts technicians, and all face the threat of looming staff shortages.

CEITC is expanding its activities into several new areas. Each one still reflects the Committee's allegiance to its primary goal: to attract, recruit and maintain a competitive work force in the light, medium and heavy equipment industry. Current projects include the following:

A Research Update
Establish a Mentor/Coach Program
Investigate Training Needs
Develop Best Practices Guidelines
Develop Profiles for Manager Positions
Increase Awareness of Training/Human Resource Issues
Enhance Partnerships with Educators

CEITC is entering the 21st century with a full slate of interests and initiatives. It intends to continue as it began: with enthusiasm, concerted energy, and every expectation of continued achievement.

A Research Update
The Committee undertook a Human Resource Needs Analysis.

The needs analysis provides a detailed profile of the equipment industry as well as related industries. It covers industry trends and future directions, skills and, work force demographics, implications of new technology, and public image. The final report will be available in July 2000. Please see details on Document Page

Establish a Mentor/Coach Program
CEITC is actively participating in the development of the Canadian Automotive Repair and Service Council (CARS) Mentor/Coach Program to determine whether it can be adopted by the equipment industry. This study is expected to provide the information needed for the industry to establish its own mentoring program. A pilot project should be up and running for September 2000.

Establish Best Practices Guidelines
The objective of this project is to assess the feasibility of standardizing the training requirements in the equipment industry and developing Best Practices/Guidelines to ensure that the industry provides comprehensive training in the working environment. CEITC will work closely with CCDA, educational institutions, provincial advisory boards, and other stakeholders in this effort.

Develop Profiles for Manager Positions
This project is aimed at developing occupational and essential skills profiles for the positions of Service Manager/Assistant Service Manager, Service Coordinator and Parts Manager related to the equipment industry. This will enable the industry to standardize position profiles and use them for recruiting quality people. A review of existing profiles from the heavy equipment and other related industries is being undertaken as a first step.

Increase Awareness of Training/Human Resource Issues
The projects undertaken by CEITC will be widely promoted throughout the equipment industry by meeting with local chapters of CAED and by publishing articles in trade magazines and CAED newsletters.

Enhance Partnerships with Educators
CEITC will increase its efforts to develop partnerships between the equipment industry and training/educational institutions. An increased partnership will aid in the development of training content, curriculum and delivery methods. Closer cooperation between the industry and educational institutions will help the Committee to identify common interests and areas of concern, respond to the specific needs of stakeholders, advise on mentor/coach training needs, and develop formal working partnerships at local levels.

Awareness Campaign
A second Industry Awareness Campaign to encourage more young people to seek employment in the equipment and related sectors. This new campaign will be launched at the CAED Annual Convention in June 2000 in Ottawa.

The centre piece of the new campaign will be its new interactive website (www.solidfutures.org). It will also feature video, CDROM and fact sheets. For more information on this campaign please contact info@solidfutures.org
