Careers in the Canadian Equipment Industry
Service Technician Job Profile
In
this job, you clean, lubricate and maintain light, medium or heavy-duty
equipment that is increasingly complex. You also diagnose problems and
repair the equipment according to the manufacturer's specifications. The
complexity and variety of equipment on the market means that you might
specialize in the products of a specific company.
Since you sometimes work on the job site, with only a laptop for diagnosing
problems, you must be organised, independent and able to deal directly
with customers. All this as well as being a good technician! As
equipment technology advances, you must be prepared to update your
knowledge and skills accordingly.
It's worth
the effort. Unemployment rates are lower than average - 97% of technicians
are employed full-time - and employment prospects are growing in the agricultural,
construction, forestry and mining areas. With interprovincial certification
you can enjoy job mobility across the country.
Depending
upon the province, trade certification requires up to a four-year apprenticeship
or a combination of work and training courses . You can earn while you
learn at one of the many community colleges across Canada.
